I am the Light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.
I love walking in the warm sand of the beach. I enjoy the thrill of the cold water splashing upon my feet with each wave. I marvel at God’s incredible greatness while gazing at the deep azure color of the water and the curl of the waves. I delight in the screams of joy and the laughter of my children playing in the sand and sea. It is also fun to look back and see my footprints in the sand and see how far I’ve walked. And it is exciting to see all the different footprints that make criss cross patterns and discover where they lead!
I heard- or perhaps read- once that a Christian should never stray far from the gospels in their daily devotional reading. We need to remind ourselves frequently of who the Bible is all about and who we should be striving to imitate. The gospels are like footprints in the sand showing us the way we should walk.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The entire Bible and the pages of history are filled with heroes of the faith who have left their footprints for us to follow as well. It is encouraging and convicting and inspiring to read their stories and learn from their examples. This is what learning is all about- to investigate God’s world, God’s people, God’s story and let the truths transform us so that we may leave an example to those who might follow us.
I Corinthians 11:1
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
Being a mother is a huge, weighty, intimidating task. Follow me as I follow Christ? That is a whole lot of responsibility. But it is important as I mother my children and as I begin this adventure of homeschooling that I abide in Christ and stay close to Him so that the footprints I leave might encourage and lead my children in the way of Jesus Christ. This is my purpose, my calling and my desire.
When I was a little girl, my parents often listened to the music of Steve Green. I very clearly remember loving one song “Find Us Faithful.” Years later, when I was pregnant with my first child, I remembered it and listened to it again. This song struck me even more powerfully than it did when I was small. It is a beautiful illustration of my ambition for this life I have been so graciously given.
We’re pilgrims on the journey
Of the narrow road
And those who’ve gone before us line the way
Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary
Their lives a stirring testament to God’s sustaining grace
Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses
Let us run the race not only for the prize
But as those who’ve gone before us
Let us leave to those behind us
The heritage of faithfulness passed on through godly lives
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful.
